Florence has experience with working with people with all kinds of difficulties, helping them develop new skills and insights into the ways of relating to others and helping them learn new perspectives of viewing the world and themselves. Clients become more aware of their feelings and the feelings of others. Clients come in individually with such problems as depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, difficulty adjusting to a change in circumstances, and other situations that disrupt their living in their families or in the world.
There are many variables in life that can move a person toward feeling anxiety or depression and related emotions. Florence helps clients explore the history of the distress and how it manifests in the present day. The process involves using the relationship with the therapist to work through some wounds of childhood. The goal of this therapy is somewhat paradoxical because there is a desire for change while, at the same time, learning to accept one's self as one is and to behave lovingly to oneself.
One of the constants of life is that there is always change. Life is a flow that entails leaving some things behind and moving on to new and different stages of life. Some of the changes seem to be for the better and some of them are very painful. Psychotherapy or counseling is an effective way to deal with the transitions. The changes in life circumstances usually require a change within ourselves as well. Making these changes, perceiving and behaving in ways that seem so alien to us, can be very frightening. We have learned certain patterns of relating that have kept us together and connected with the people in our lives - even if it's not as connected as we might like to be. Letting go of these ways of being takes courage, support, and insight. Therapy is a place where one can find that support and gain that insight.
